Horror
The third book in the series about a werewolf radio DJ named Kitty, it's filled with mystery, suspense, horror, as well as a dash of romance. After being exposed on live T.V., Kitty Norville decides to take time off from her show to write her memoirs and to live a hermit's life in a mountain cabin. Unfortunately, trouble seems to find her wherever she goes. And this time trouble involves blood-soaked curses left on her front porch and a mysterious black wolf with red eyes. And when Cormac, the werewolf hunter, shows up with Kitty's lawyer, Ben, after a werewolf hunt gone bad, things really get tense.
Kitty Takes a Holiday is darker than the previous two books, and the tension between Cormac, Ben, and Kitty escalates. While a complete story in itself, you're still left breathlessly anticipating the next book. A couple of the chapters felt long and dragged out, but my interest was maintained, and the overall story was an exciting read from beginning to end. Vaughn again shows her knowledge of wolf pack dynamics with her skill of blending it into the human realm via Kitty's point of view. In many ways, she makes werewolves feel more real than any other werewolf story I've ever read.
And besides, how can you not enjoy reading about a werewolf named Kitty?
Another thing I admire is Vaughn's ability to effectively handle romantic elements without the normal gratuity you find in other books. She actually manages to keep it steamy and relatively clean at the same time--something I think many writers could benefit from learning.
